Sport Ireland and Sport NI do not state that coaches/volunteers can never transport a young person by themselves, however they recommend individuals and organisations recognise the risks and put in place appropriate measures to reduce these risks. There may be times when it is necessary to be alone with a child in a car, e.g. last child to be dropped off, parents not turned up to pick up the child, etc. In these cases you should inform parents of arrangements made, why and how long the journey will take. You should always attempt to have more than one child in the car, alternate drivers if possible and which child is dropped off last. Drivers should have a point of contact/mobile phone. It is not the role of the club to organise transport however the club may choose to do so. Many clubs could not operate without the goodwill of volunteers and parents ensuring that children are transported to events and returned home in a private car. Where individual parents transport for their own child or arrangements made with other parents this is a personal arrangement and not a matter for the club. However where a club has appointed drivers they should be vetted through AccessNI/National Vetting Bureau if driving regularly, and therefore meeting the regulated activity criteria.

The National Vetting Bureau (Children & Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 - 2016 commenced on 29th April 2016 and the Act provides a legislative basis for the mandatory vetting of persons who wish to undertake certain activities relating to children or vulnerable persons. (Relevant Work under the Act is defined as 'any work or activity which consists of the provision of educational, training, leisure, social or physical activities (whether or not for commercial or any other consideration) to children or vulnerable persons.' [2012 Act - Sch 1, part 1, (5) & Sch 1, part 2, (4)]) Part V of the Police Act 1997 delivers the legislation that makes it compulsory to check individuals working in a regulated activity with children and/or vulnerable persons.
